Key Stage 1 School Council

At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, our Key Stage 1 School Council provides an important opportunity for our youngest pupils to begin developing their voice within the school community. Rooted in our vision of “Rooted in faith, we reach for the stars,” the council helps children understand that their ideas, thoughts and experiences matter and can help shape our school.

Through the School Council, children learn how to share their views respectfully, listen carefully to others and work collaboratively to make positive changes. In meetings, pupils discuss topics that are important to them such as learning experiences, playtimes, wellbeing and how we can make our school an even happier and more inclusive place for everyone.

Members are chosen fairly by their classmates so that every class is represented. School Council representatives gather ideas and suggestions from their peers before sharing them in meetings, helping children understand that they are speaking on behalf of others as well as themselves. This introduces important early concepts of democracy, fairness and responsibility in a way that is meaningful and accessible for younger pupils.

Our Key Stage 1 School Council is closely linked to the values that guide life at Holy Trinity. Pupils learn to show CARE – Community, Aspiration, Resilience and Enjoyment as they work together, solve problems and celebrate successes. Through this process, children begin to develop confidence, empathy and respect for different viewpoints.

School Council participation also provides a strong foundation for pupil leadership across the school. By taking part from an early age, children begin to see themselves as active members of the school community who can contribute ideas, show kindness and help others. This sense of belonging supports our aim of nurturing courageous, thoughtful learners who are ready to make a positive difference both within our school and beyond.
